Recap of 2007 for media

2007 was a rollercoaster of a year in the PC industry!  Here are some of the areas that experienced considerable change this year, and which Lenovo has accomplished quite a few innovation milestones, including in PC design, security and wireless capabilities.

ThinkCentreDesign - 2007 will be remembered as the year that the electronics industry, along with many others, went “green.” Lenovo raised the bar for PC innovation with the introduction of some of the most environmentally conscious products in the PC industry.

  • In September, Lenovo unveiled its most energy-efficient desktop yet, the ThinkCentre A61e ultra small form factor desktop. As the first PC to run on energy-efficient 45-watt AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core and AMD Sempron single core processors, and with a 25% smaller footprint than its predecessor, the ThinkCentre A61e reduces users’ annual energy costs by up to 50 percent.
  • In October, Lenovo introduced the industry’s first EPEAT Gold rated monitor, the ThinkVision L193p. This monitor is the first product in the EPEAT registry to use more than 25% post-consumer recycled content in its plastic parts.

ThinkCentreIn addition, Lenovo demonstrated its commitment to meet the demands of these users by providing increased PC durability for use in mobile environments. In 2007, Lenovo introduced the first top cover roll cage for notebook PCs on the ThinkPad.  The new roll cage is a honeycomb-design that cushions the notebook’s LCD, reinforcing the screen and helping reduce stress on the display structure and antenna.  This advancement in design complements other durable ThinkPad features such as the shock-mounted hard drive with a magnesium roll cage and Lenovo’s Active Protection system for airbag-like protection, resulting in an extraordinarily durable notebook.

Wireless – Road warriors and mobile PC users had a new wireless option introduced earlier this year to make computing on-the-go easier: Certified Wireless USB (WUSB).  Lenovo is one of the first manufacturers to offer this technology on its ThinkPad notebooks. This communication technology wirelessly connects computers to keyboards, mice, cameras, printers and anything that uses a USB port at faster speeds than what’s currently available.  In fact, experts anticipate that WUSB could replace current standards like Bluetooth and 802.11 Wi-Fi Networking over the next few years.
Lenovo also announced plans with Avaya to integrate IP telephony technology into select ThinkPad notebooks in order to allow mobile workers to take and place calls directly from their notebook PCs.  For example, check out the keyboard light located at the top of the screen bezel on a ThinkPad by pressing the Fn and PgUp keys (lower left and upper right on the keyboard) – eventually that light could be designed to blink and alert users when they have a voice mail in queue.

ThinkCentreSecurity – The evolution of Full Disk Encryption made headlines in 2007 as a major step towards decreasing PC data breaches.  This year, Seagate launched its first full disk encryption technology after consulting with Lenovo security experts on the needs and practices of PC users. As a result, Lenovo is one of the leading PC companies to enable this feature in its notebooks and remains at the forefront of the industry on how to manage this technology and support mainstream adoption.

Another security-related area that’s seeing further development is Biometrics.  The ThinkPad was the first notebook PC to feature an integrated biometric fingerprint reader for greater security and Lenovo has shipped more than six million ThinkPad notebooks with this industry-leading security solution to-date.  Lenovo has continued to lead the industry in this space with offerings such as face recognition technology on its most recent model notebooks.

While 2007 has been a busy and exciting year for Lenovo, the company plans to continue developing new innovations related to biometrics, wireless technology and design in 2008.

NZ Reseller Newsin its "5 tips for low energy business consumption"

5 TipsNZ Reseller Newsin its "5 tips for low energy business consumption" article reports, "For times when laptops are turned on -- that is, when they're being used by employees -- Lenovo recommends configuring the disk drive to spin down after five minutes of inactivity, the monitor to go blank at 10 minutes, and the machine to go into standby, or suspend, mode after 20 minutes".

And later in the same article, "Compact PC models, such as Lenovo's ThinkCentre A61e desktop or Dell's Inspiron 531, are more efficient than standard desktops and save space as well as power (the A61e is about the size of a 3-inch-thick notebook binder). Compact PCs may use as little as half the power of a standard desktop, include Energy Star 4.0-mandated high-efficiency power supplies that are at least 80 percent efficient and include a low-speed fan that reduces noise levels.
